Why you shouldn’t work for Custom Analysis (and some reasons why you should)

Why You Shouldn’t Work for Us

1. You Want to Work at a Brand-Name Company

  • If prestige matters to you, we’re not it. People recognize Microsoft or Deloitte, but not Custom Analysis.

  • While we hope to build our reputation, right now, we’re a small, unknown business.

2. You Need to Work with a Team

  • With fewer than 10 employees, you’ll likely be the only Custom Analysis person on your project.

  • If you need close collaboration and regular team interaction, you may struggle here.

3. You Want Structure and a Career Path

  • We don’t have a clear ladder or formal promotions.

  • If you’re looking for a defined career path, our flat structure might not work for you.

Why You Should Work for Us

1. You Want to Help Build the Brand

  • We’re figuring out who we are as a company and need your help to shape our identity.

  • Whether by excelling at your job or spotting new opportunities, you’ll play a role in building something new.

2. You Have an Independent Streak

  • Our main expectation is simple: make the client happy.

  • If you deliver, we’ll leave you alone to do your work with minimal interference.

3. You Want to Create Your Own Career Path

  • We can’t offer a formal career plan, but we’ll support you in learning skills or pursuing side projects.

  • Example: One employee adjusted their hours to pursue a career in the music industry—we’re happy to facilitate

We don’t have a mission statement. Here’s why:

Most Mission Statements Are Nonsense

They’re usually overly broad and don’t say much about what the company actually does.

At Custom Analysis, we just tell you exactly what type of project you’ll be working on, the specific agency, what the client is like, etc. It’s specific.

They Attract “Missionaries”

Missionaries typically want to work for a cause.

But we don’t have a “cause.” Our cause is simply to do good work for our clients and get paid for it.

Missionaries would quickly get disillusioned and quit.

We prefer to hire people who just want to do a good job and get paid well for it.

Great Mission Statements Are Deeply Personal

People work hard for what they care about, but what they care about is extremely personal to them, and that’s great.

But we can’t force you to care about what we care about, so we focus on making sure your work life is reasonably smooth so you can do what you like to do outside of work.

What we expect from you

(or why we don’t do performance management reviews)

We don’t do formal performance reviews—they tend to be just another corporate nonsense activities. Instead, we focus on one overarching expectation: figure out what makes the client happy and deliver it. How you achieve that depends on your experience level:

Entry-Level: Be Reliable
Do what you say you’ll do, on time and with high quality. Bonus points for finding innovative solutions that make life easier for the client. We got started simply by being entry level employees who figured out how to use Excel pivot tables.

Experienced: Get a Quick Win
Within your first 30-60 days, deliver something valuable to create a great first impression and build trust with the client. A quick win buys you a lot of credibility for the rest of the project.

Senior/Expert: Be an Influencer (not the TikTok kind)
Clients don’t always know what they want or know what the right thing to do is. If If you’re a senior or expert level consultant, we expect you to influence the clients to do the right thing.

What you can expect from us

No Bureaucratic Nonsense

We hate bureaucracy as much as you do and we’re too small to have one anyway. Need something fixed? Just email us (the founders), and we’ll handle it directly—no endless phone trees or back-and-forth with HR. For example, when one of our employees had a health insurance issue, I updated his profile online myself, and it was solved immediately. Simple, right?

No Extra Work

At other consulting firms, employees juggle two jobs: client work and internal projects like business development. Not here. We’ll take care of the company stuff so you can focus on your client work. We won’t pile on unnecessary tasks—your client might be demanding, but we won’t add to the chaos.

Freedom to Be Yourself

One of the downsides of working at a big company is you have to hide who you are. That’s why I (Dale, one of the founders) was a terrible employee. So at Custom Analysis we expect you to so show up as you are. If you’re a weirdo, well, we just have to put you with a client who is also weirdo. So long as you’re doing great work, we don’t care.

Our compensation philosophy

(or, how we don’t do pay bands)

At Custom Analysis, we always hated the rigid compensation approach at big companies where you have things like salary bands, forced rankings, or promotion-based raises. Instead, we tailor compensation to the individual, keeping things flexible and above market.

Here’s how we make that happen:

Above-Market Salary

Your salary will likely exceed market rates thanks to our two simple approaches:

You Tell Us

Share your ideal salary, and we’ll find a position that aligns with your expectations. You’re probably targeting above market salaries so if we can deliver what you ask, then great!

We Ask You

If we have an open position, we’ll offer you a competitive salary based on the bill rate—take it or leave it, no pressure. We’re not hard negotiators, just matter of fact about it.

Guaranteed 5% Bonus

Hit 1800 billable hours in a year, and you’ll receive a 5% bonus. Simple.

401(k) Match: 5%, No Vesting

We match up to 5% of your contributions with no vesting schedule

Plus, we use a nice low-fee 401(k) plan so you’re not getting screwed on your returns

.Healthcare Coverage

We offer a premium CareFirst PPO plan with dental and vision, no deductible, and low copays.

Free for employees, 50% covered for dependents. If you don’t need coverage, we can potentially pay a higher salary.

Flexible PTO

No accruals, no formal approvals—just take time off when you need it.

Hitting 1800 billable hours still leaves ~5 weeks of PTO plus 11 federal holidays.

Free Laptop

Choose your own laptop when you start, and it’s yours to keep—even if you leave the company.

Insurance Options

Free coverage: life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability.

Optional add-ons: critical illness, accident insurance, and voluntary life insurance.
